Trans-Amazon Drilling Project (TADP): origins and evolution of the forests, climate, and hydrology of the South American tropics

چکیده
This article presents the scientific rationale for an ambitious ICDP drilling project to continuously sample Late Cretaceous to modern sediment in four different sedimentary basins that transect the equatorial Amazon of Brazil, from the Andean foreland to the Atlantic Ocean. The goals of this project are to document the evolution of plant biodiversity in the Amazon forests and to relate biotic diversification to changes in the physical environment, including climate, tectonism, and the surface landscape. These goals require long sedimentary records from each of the major sedimentary basins across the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, which can only be obtained by drilling because of the scarcity of Cenozoic outcrops. The proposed drilling will provide the first long, nearly continuous regional records of the Cenozoic history of the forests, their plant diversity, and Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the IODP and the ICDP. 42 P. A. Baker et al.: Trans-Amazon Drilling Project the associated changes in climate and environment. It also will address fundamental questions about landscape evolution, including the history of Andean uplift and erosion as recorded in Andean foreland basins and the development of west-to-east hydrologic continuity between the Andes, the Amazon lowlands, and the equatorial Atlantic. Because many modern rivers of the Amazon basin flow along the major axes of the old sedimentary basins, we plan to locate drill sites on the margin of large rivers and to access the targeted drill sites by navigation along these rivers.

متن کاملNeogene origins and implied warmth tolerance of Amazon tree species
Tropical rain forest has been a persistent feature in South America for at least 55 million years. The future of the contemporary Amazon forest is uncertain, however, as the region is entering conditions with no past analogue, combining rapidly increasing air temperatures, high atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, possible extreme droughts, and extensive removal and modification by humans...
متن کاملMiocene orographic uplift forces rapid hydrological change in the southern central Andes
Rainfall in the central Andes associated with the South American Monsoon and the South American Low-Level Jet results from orographic effects on atmospheric circulation exerted by the Andean Plateau and the Eastern Cordillera. However, despite its importance for South American climate, no reliable records exist that allow decoding the evolution of thresholds and interactions between Andean topo...

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is a climate change mitigation strategy employed to reduce the intensity of deforestation and GHGS emissions. In recent decades, drastic land use changes in Mazandaran province caused a substantial reduction in the amount of Hyrcanian forests. The present research based on objectives of REDD projects paid to identify of fore...

In this study, we report the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from extracts of native fruits from Amazonia, Brazil. AgNPs were characterized by UV/Vis and medium infrared (MIR) spectroscopy. Their antimicrobial activities were evaluated against the growth of bacteria and leavers, as well as the evaluation of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal c...
